Phone: 780-790-1100

My name is Hélène Hopkins and I am excited to be returning as vice-principal at École McTavish for the 2025-2026 school year.

I am originally from a small coastal village in New Brunswick and made Fort McMurray my home in July 2017. I initially graduated with a Diploma in Health Sciences and a General Bachelor of Sciences degree from Université Sainte-Anne (2008). I then continued my education and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry, and a Bachelor of Secondary Education (2012), from Université de Moncton. My teaching career started immediately after graduation. I taught in a French school division in New Brunswick for 5 years before my start at École McTavish in 2017, and have taught a variety of mathematics and science courses at the junior and high school levels. I recently completed a Master of Education in Leadership, Evaluation, Curriculum, and Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa (2023).

When I’m not teaching, I can be found playing or coaching volleyball, spending time outdoors, travelling, or reading a good book. My husband Thomas and I have two adventurous daughters, Évie and Lénie, and the sweetest dog, Sofie, whom we adopted from the local SPCA. I have also been a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces for almost 20 years and volunteer my time with the local Air Cadet Squadron, 868 YMM Rotary Northstar. My work with the Cadet Program has provided me with numerous leadership opportunities and allowed me to mentor youth throughout Canada.

I look forward to working with our marauder families and supporting all students through their journey at École McTavish. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out by email at helene.hopkins@fmpsd.ab.ca or by phone (780) 790-1100.

Division Notice

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
