Math & Science
I have had the privilege of teaching with FMPSD for the past 18 years, and I have been part of the team at École McTavish since it opened in 2011. I currently teach Grade 11 and 12 Mathematics and Biology, and I previously taught high school Mathematics at Westwood Community High School. Over the years, I have also supported students outside the classroom through tutoring in Grades 7–12.
At McTavish, I serve as the teacher sponsor for our Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) and sit on FMPSD's SOGI committee (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity). I am actively involved in the Alberta Teachers’ Association Local in Fort McMurray, where I represent teachers on several committees, including Teacher Welfare, the Negotiating Subcommittee, Diversity, Equity and Human Rights, and Women in Leadership.
My academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and Anthropology from the University of Alberta. Before becoming a teacher, I worked in research laboratories, focusing on aquatic ecology and the effects of mercury on freshwater ecosystems in the mountain parks. I also conducted research at the Limnology Lab and the Meanook Biological Research Station in Athabasca. Later, I returned to the University of Alberta to complete my Bachelor of Education, specializing in secondary science and mathematics. I bring these experiences into the classroom, sharing how science and research really work with my students.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been honoured to receive FMPSD’s Doing What’s Best for Kids award, APEGA’s Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, and the Breakthrough Junior Challenge's Teacher Mentor award.
Beyond the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my chosen family and friends. I also serve as chair of Wood Buffalo Pride, an organization close to my heart. My passions include scuba diving, traveling, hiking, camping, and kayaking.
I believe that every student can learn math and science, even when they don’t initially believe in themselves. It is my job to help them believe they can too. Every youth is unique, with their own passions, strengths, and ways of learning. What I love most about teaching is watching students grow, discover their abilities, and share their curiosity and enthusiasm for the world. My students inspire me every day, and I feel truly honoured to be part of their learning journey.
